Did you upgrade the OS version?  That wipes out the sysctl.conf
file.  It will need to be put back in place and your computer rebooted.

Did you add a second terminal window so that aips is (by default)
making a very large (in X) display?  In that case your sysctl.conf
file will need to have its maximum shared memory doubled.

Otherwise I can't think of a reason for things to change overnight.
