i have the explanation for the problem and the fact that
FUDGE worked on it.  The order of the axes in your old
data is non-standard and so it exposed references to 
the input header using pointers recomputed for the output
header (in standard order).  I found two such, one of which
set NIF.

BTW - there must be some further input parameter because
I get bad solutions - but at least I now get 2 IFs worth now.
