You should login from gygax to some real computer (gygax is a gateway machine).
Use thuban for example.  Before starting aips, do
echo $HOME
touch $HOME/tempfile
to see if you have permission to write in $HOME.
The do
aips notv
because you have no way to see an aips TV in Pasadena from Socorro.  I suspect much 
of the password and error message stuff comes from trying to start aips TVs in some
remote place like gygax.  Note that you should try such things ahead of the TOO
observations to iron out the details...
