did top (outside aips) and spy (inside aips) show UVFIX but without 
increasing cpu time?

a normal kill (or abort inside aips) should get rid of UVFIX but 
depending on the actual state could lead to file locks not going away so 
easily (they should be removed when the task is killed, but ...)
