I forwarded your request to the helpdesk at aoc.nrao.edu - they have root 
privilege and I do not want it and so cannot do this sort of thing.
After helpdesk responds the students need to log out and log back in.
Then if they type groups they should see aipsuser.

Normally one must be in the aipsuser group in order to use AIPS at the AOC.
