New Staff Reply: AIPS task UVRFI

Your inquiry will take quite a bit of examination to answer properly.

But you should understand that UVRFI is totally an experimental
task. It was written by a mathematician who is not fully conversant
with the inner details of AIPS - so I am not surprised by the presence
of expectations of NX tables when they are forbidden by sort order.
Nor will I be surprised by much else. This task is not really known
to work. The algorithm has worked well on GMRT data with stationary
sources of stable RFI. At the VLA, RFI usually comes from satellites,
aircraft, radar, and other non-stable, non-stationary sources.

With EVLA data where RFI cannot be avoided we are now using the task
RFLAG which would be useful for you. It does not attempt to rescue the
real signals swamped by RFI, it just flags those times and channels
and goes on.

I will pass on your queries to Leonia (who has retired) and Fraser.
