The 4.0.x compilers simply do not work.  They are really antique by now 
and some later ones
*see the aips web site) do seem to work on Solaris anyway.  The IBM 
compiler was for the
PPC chip now long obsolete.  The Intel compiler ifort is what we use.  
The version we use
is rather old so a full installation self-compiled would be better - 
later compiler versions have
worked (we tested a lion version but it was not enough better to be 
worth having 2 versions).
