New Staff Reply: High RMS Noise
I am not sure how to respond to this - the script is a
bit overwhelming to read. One thing that can really matter
is rfi and ringing. We usually recommend a SPLAT or something
that applies Hanning smoothing before doing anything else.
Then set SMOOTH=0 and leave it there at least until imaging.
The editing task RFLAG has proven useful at L band (and elsewhere)
and might reduce the tedious TVFLG and SPFLG. With no Cleaning,
real signals will make sidelobes that will look like noise to
IMEAN and so raise the apparent rms. There will be real continuum
signals at L band even if there are no line signals. Have you deleted
a lot of data? That would raise the noise compared to the
optimistic sensitivity calculator.
