[daip] more on AIPS disks and startup messages

Hi Eric,

I'm sorry for these very basic questions. I feel like
I'm in the Twilight Zone...

Last night, as I was getting ready to leave, I went to
exit the AIPS window I'd opened on my laptop as a
check against the upgraded desktop (previous message).
I noticed that AIPS now thinks I have 4 disks on my
laptop(!!!). I didn't change *anything* in the laptop
system. The four disks it is showing me is actually 2
disks twice - disks 1 and 4 are the same, and disks 2
and 3 are the same.

My initial assumption was that for some reason, AIPS
is now trying to do something across the network.
??I'm not sure that I have ever had both machines
running AIPS at the same time, before, which might
explain why I have never seen this before.?? However,
I tried a bunch of experiments, and my conclusion is
now that I probably have faulty setups on both laptop
and desktop. (See symptoms, below). I definitely have
a tangle right now, which I'd like to straighten out.

I want to run each system standalone. I think that
means, for each computer (laptop and desktop) I need:

- In DADEVS.LIST 1 (and only 1) entry per data area,
in the order I want the disks to be numbered.

- In NETSP 1 (and only 1) entry per data area, in
order I want disks numbered, with same name as in
DADEVS.LIST.

Is that right?

Do I need to have anything in NETSP if I'm not running
a networked AIPS?

Are there any other places I need to be referring to
the disk names?

Thanks much,
Susan

details below
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Experiments I tried, after discovery that laptop AIPS
was trying to have 4 disks:

I tried rebooting my laptop, leaving the desktop as-is
(running AIPS). Same thing - laptop tries to see 4
disks, gives error messages about DA01 and DA02

-------------
I tried rebooting my desktop. Then, without logging
back into desktop, I tried rebooting my laptop, then
restarting AIPS. Same thing - it thinks there are 4
disks (2 x the same 2). So, I think this is not a
network thing after all. ?Perhaps I have not tried to
use AIPS on the laptop since Eric updated it in
December 2011? I cannot say with certainty that this
is a new problem. I ran a midnight job on something
like Jan 24, 2012, but I don't think that should have
affected the setup files.

---------------
Just for completeness, tried disconnecting laptop from
the network, and starting up AIPS. Got exactly the
same thing as previously.

---------------

So, I think I have a problem with the AIPS
installations, and it's unrelated to network status.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Symptoms (laptop):

When I start aips, it gives me these messages and errors:

DADEVS.PL: This program is untested under Perl version
5.010
(Using global default file
/Users/neff/aips/DA00/DADEVS.LIST for DADEVS.PL)
Disk 1 (1) is
/Volumes/Apps_and_Docs/sgneff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1
Disk 2 (2) is
/Volumes/Apps_and_Docs/sgneff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2
Disk 3 (3) is /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2
Disk 4 (4) is /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1

and

AIPS 1: ZDCHIN: NO NETSP ENTRY FOR DA01
AIPS 1: ZDCHIN: NO NETSP ENTRY FOR DA02

----------

What's in the setup files?

DADEVS.LIST file (laptop) has:
- /Volumes/Apps_and_Docs/sgneff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1
- /Volumes/Apps_and_Docs/sgneff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2
## - /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1
## - /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2
- /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2
- /Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1

[I don't know why lines 3and4 are commented out, then
the same info is given again in lines 5&6. I think the
DADEVS.LIST file should have either lines 1&2 active,
or lines 5&6 active, but not both. I'm not sure which
assignments it should have (Volumes/Apps.... vs
/Users/neff... ), or if it matters. The current disk
names are /Volumes/Apps_and_Docs/sgneff ... (The names
/Users/neff.... are now (I believe) logical
assignments and not real disk names; they are what the
disks used to be named. However they are used
throughout the AIPS setup, see below).

I also don't know if the order matters. I *think* the
first disk listed is supposed to be AIPS disk 1,
second supposed to be AIPS disk 2, etc., but I'm not
sure that's right.

Finally, in this listing, if order matters, then the
first pair of assignments and the second pair of
assignments (/Volumes/Apps... vs /Users/neff...) are
crossed. ]

NETSP file (laptop) has:
# Disk name TIMDEST --------------Allowed Users-----------
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_2 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
/Users/neff/aips/DATA/LOCALHOST_1 365.0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

[There are no tabs embedded. I don't think I should be
listing each disk 5 times. Should these names also be
changed to the new naming convention, instead of the
old one (now logical assignments)? ]
