That's interesting. I'm running this on Intel Mac OS 10.5.6 and 10.5.7; 
both fail. The first character is a number; I've even looked for odd 
characters with od -c.

Since writing this, we've rebuilt with the gnu compilers and it fails in 
the same way.

Which version of Mac OS are you using?
