You will find the aips web site at

     http://www.aoc.nrao.edu

The top page offers a What is AIPS click to a short page with a
reference to a 1994 paper. The aips cookbook Chapter 1 is a similar
basic text that is more current - the CookBook table of contents may be
reached from the above page and that will provide the chapters as
separate ps or pdf files. The help file for IMAGR which may also be
reached from the web page on documentation has a lengthy EXPLAIN file
which may answer some of your questions.

Your question sounds in many ways more basic that the details of the
software. The primary reference is "Synthesis Imaging in Radio
Astronomy II", ed. Taylor, Carilli, & Perley, Astronomical Society of
the Pacific Conference Series, volume 180 published initially in 1999.
