If you really want to compile locally (the gnu compiler load modules are 
slower by up to 40%) the problem is probably the 1 new task UVRFI.  In 
the file $AIPS_ROOT/LINUX/INSTALL/APGNOT.LIS put a minus sign in front 
of the row that is missing the minus sign.  Then restart the 
installation - or just execute INSTEP4 in that same disk area followed by

$CDTST
RUN POPSGN
0 POPSDAT TST
and a carriage return when you get the > prompt.
