First - I am amazed that I bothered to check this message for valid 
content.  I discard 10s of spams a day (after much filtering) and a mail 
with no subject normally is not examined at all.  Please always use an 
identifiable aips subject.

My aips asks DATA TYPE? if I type 2+2 also, but if I type
PRINT 2+2 or TYPE 2+2 it says 4.

The DADEVS message is an excess of caution on the part of a Perl 
developer that got bitten by Perl changes in the older days.  Perl is 
now stable enough that upgrades do not break our existing Perl scripts - 
or at least we would be very surprised if they did.
