When you do a tvlabel, the labeling draws colored letters in GRCHAN and 
a black background in graphics channel 8.  If you hvae GRCHAN set to 8 
then the letters will be black.  Or if you do a gwrite to the GRCHAN 
with RGBCOLOR=0, then that channel becomes black too.
