Wow - two 30" monitors!  I don't know if I should help you...

Seriously, though - read HELP XAS inside AIPS.  It will tell you about 
.Xdefaults parameters that you may set to guide XAS in its behavior.
One is AIPStv*xpixels which you can set to limit the size it requests.
