Is it possible that your subarrays are not in time order or have
mingled time order or have such large times that accuracy is
compromised? 

SPLIT will set sort order '**' if it finds a time that is less than
the previous maximum time as it loops over one subarray at a time in
the outer loop and vis number in the file in the inner loop.
