There are several reasons why the servers do not start. Since they
are programs running inside xterms which exit when the programs
end/fail the error messages disappear too repidly. To debug:

cp $SYSUNIX/XASERVERS $SYSLOCAL

edit the $SYSLOCAL version, changing the -hold line from a comment (#
in col 1) to be executed), i.e.

#                                                  debug
   AIPS_MSG_NAME_FLAG="$AIPS_MSG_NAME_FLAG -hold"

This will cause the xterm to remain until you kill it and will then
allow the error message to be read.

Among possible errors:
1. The system service needed has not been defined
2. An issue with LD_LIBRARY_PATH so that needed libraries are not
   found.
3. A few systems do not allow the compound execution that we order up
   to try to deal with the library issue.
