I agree the XAS sizes in the first list are clearly wrong, but you
didn't show the crucial point, the one that was most likely causing the
"permission denied" error: the protection on the *directory*:

  ls -ld MACINT/LOAD/

I had assumed when I saw the error message:

>> Trying to make hard link XAS2 to XAS ...
>> /Users/Shared/AIPS/31DEC08/SYSTEM/UNIX/UNIXSERVERS: line 250: ./XAS2:
>> Permission denied

that the directory permissions did not allow the "ln" command to create
a new hard link in the LOAD area.
