grhodes at nrao.edu issues "NRAO numbers" which are really only VLA
numbers. People use different numbers to separate projects which is
absolutely okay if they are on their own desktop machine. It is not
okay on a public machine used by multiple people.

Gayle will be fairly pronmpt in issuing numbers to new users but
I bet some of these folks have used aips in Socorro and so have a
number they should use. But Gayle only works a couple days a week now
so her response will not be immediate. The list of user numbers is
distributed and updated with aips. It is $DOCTXT/USERNO.LIS. On
public machines (properly maintained) one can limit which numbers are
allowed on which disks (file $NET0/NETSP). But this requires that a
site be well and uniformly maintained - a condition in which I could
never get GB. That is why I do not support aips in GB. Now that Pat
does not do aips in CV, I do not know if anyone will do that support.
