Yes - it is so simple we do not mention it.  The VLA assigns user
numbers to visitors, and so on public machines they have some
relevance.  On a personal machine such as yours, they are a way to
escape the otherwise flat file system that AIPS uses.  Use a different
user number for your different projects.  The number 1 is special - it
has extra powers reserved for an "AIPS Manager" and the password
defaults to AMANAGER rather than blank.  All other numbers > 1 have no
default password although you could add one if you were so inclined.
