Why are you worrying about a compiler - you do not need one.  Do the
binary installation.  Typically, Apple provides a C but not a Fortran.
And the GNU Fortran may not have caught up with TIGER.  The 4.0
gcc/g77 has not been tested (and I am allergic to anything .0).
