I am suprised that you had such difficulties on an HP machine.  I
install each release of AIPS on an HP computer at Bonn using
install.pl and do not have any trouble.  We do not have a binary
version for HPs since we do not own any.  For that same reason, our
support for HPs is somewhat compromised - but I do run install.pl each
year and the MNJ each day in Bonn and AIPS is used there mostly
without difficulty on the HPs.
