The problem is that the particular pixel on which the slit is
positioned is very balck so it wants to make the symbol white for
contrast, ignoring the factt that the symbol is many pixels in size.

I went looking in the POstScript file for this box  Find the comment
line (% following vectors are of type contour) and edit the line above
from 1.000 setgray to 0.000 setgray.

 1250 1826 m 0.000 setgray 1210 1786 v 1408 1586 v 1448 1626 v 1250 1826 v
% following vectors are of type contours

AIPS PostScript files are pretty simple (deliberately) to allow
editing to celan up labeling, add arrows or whatever.  See the help
file named postscript.
