See the aips manager FAQ page on our web site.  You have to define
your machine to have a 24-bit or an 8-bit visual.  Linux defaults to
16 bits which is scientifically useless.

What was the story about the compile troubles you had?

(I have been away for a week and have just been reading through that
part of your correspondence which made it to daip.)
