Our software is available for free from 

http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips

and runs under Linux on PCs and also under Mac OS/X and SUN Solaris.
It reads images in FITS format (there are references to the FITS web
site on our site) and can perform various numerical operations and
display functions on general images.  It is designed for astronomy use
and so may be more specialized than you will find desirable - but all
code is available under GNU license.
