The AIPSUPD that you sent me does not contain the string << and line
161 is blameless.

Note that, if you make a change in a file locally in an area
controlled by cvs and on a file controlled by cvs, then at the next
cvs update, you will be told that there was a mismatch and cvs will
attempt to merge the two files and will add comments highlighting the
area of merger. Those comments do contain the strings <<<<< and >>>>>
(more or less). The file that you are executing should be in

$TST/$ARCH/UPDATE

and should no longer be a link file.

One possibility - if you have not run the MNJ in a while, is that we
changed AIPSUPD and changed from a link file (to a cvs controlled
area) to a copy of the file from that area. This file was changed and
you might have trouble with the file you are executing being changed
while you execute it.

Try the MNJ over again.
