I suspect the old version of readline we ship with AIPS is not 
compatible with Solaris 2.9.  I suggest fetching the latest readline 
from gnu (http://directory.fsf.org/readline.html) and installing it 
yourself.  Once you've installed the latest version of readline, you 
should be able to rerun the installation procedure for AIPS, specifying 
the readline location, and build AIPS.
