[daip] failures at UVa aips

Our sysadmin at UVa installed AIPS on a dept machine for a grad
student here but it isn't working. I have not looked in great detail yet
but there are two errors that they sent me from an attempted startup that
I don't know what they mean. I included the attempted start up below. Do
you know what might cause this? As far as I understand he installed it as
root so I was wondering if that could be the reason for the DISK CODE
error? Thanks,

p.s. I upgraded my AIPS on my machines and I really like some of the new
improvements to AIPS!! Particularly I think the output to postscript for
listr's etc that don't go to a file is great :)

It was there before but needed fixing...

Subject: aips errors

selana DA00 # aips

START_AIPS: You do not seem to be at a workstation (TERM=linux)

AIPS 1: ZOPEN: FILE TSTMEM:MED000000; NOT FOUND

The above errors are sort of serious:

1. The environment variable $TERM is set to linux which is wierd
   We expect one from

        sun*|*xterm*|*hpterm|dtterm|iris*|Eterm|screen

otherwise we take the screen to be a dumb terminal incapable of X
Windows. Also variables like AIPS_MSG_EMULATOR are expected to be
something reasonable like xterm (the default).

2. The installation probably stalled somewhere - hopefully after
   INSTEP4 finished.

   cd $AIPS_ROOT
   source LOGIN.CSH (or . LOGIN.SH)
   $CDTST

   RUN FILAIP
AMANAGER is the password if requested, then answer
   35 -100
   6 2
   8

   RUN POPSGN
   0 POPSDAT TST
   <cr>

Cheers,

Eric Greisen
