[daip] install 31DEC03 failure

eric & co:

stuck on installing on my laptop.  redhat linux.  did compiler
stuff fine.    two problems so far.  XAS doesn't make. and
then INSTEP2 dies.  one obvious problem is that it's trying
to find things in 31DEC03/UNKNOWN  instead of LINUX/.. 
although the final wizard screen showed the right stuff, that
architecture was known, etc.   looks like $CDTST, etc.
didn't get set?
