You are using a Linux computer with the Xwindows running a 16-bit
"TrueColor" display.  (xdpyinfo will show you this.)  You need to
change it to either an 8-bit PseudoColor or a 24-bit TrueColor
display.  16 bits divided amongst 3 colors is not enough to do
science.  You Linux system managers will need to advise you on how to
do this - it is a simple change of a file and reboot.
