Hello,
We're having trouble with large IMAGR jobs and wonder if you can help.
The basic problem is that, after a 100,000 iteration IMAGR, which took
about 4 weeks to run (on a 1.4 GHz Pentium 4, running Aips of 31dec01
- odd name as it's a year old now- under Red Hat 7.0), the job crashed
as it was unable to write the clean components after the final iterations
(see end of attachment 5).
As far as we can see, the clean components exist (see attachment 2), as
do the residual maps, but the components weren't put back onto the maps.
This is the second such failure so we must be doing something
systematically wrong.
THE FIRST THING we would be interested to know is whether it is possible
to somehow or other put the clean components onto the residual maps.
So we aren't going to run any more imagrs until you get back to us
in case we inadvertently screw up the chances of finishing off the maps.
The residual maps look OK, with reasonable rms.
SECONDLY, it would be nice to know how to avoid such problems in future.
The jobs have been run by my student, Nick Seymour.
I attach various files with:
1) Nick's .dadev set up. (ASTRO-5 is the pc on which aips is running;
SOUSUN 15 is an old Sun workstation, running Solaris. On the pc Aips
always says that it can't recognise the Sun disc so I don't think any
data gets put there; however the scratch area on SOUSUN15 is regularly
cleared so is it possible that some relevant file is put there and then
cleared before it can be used?)
2) The image header from one of the maps we were trying to make, together
with a print out of the clean components.
3) The IMAGR inputs (Nick sets it up so we can restart jobs).
4) The listing of the relevant aips catalogue whilst the job was
running, which show active scratch files, and the list when it had
finished.
5) The messages that IMAGR produced. (Possibly only the last bit is
relevant but we've sent it all, just in case.)
All help very gratefully received. These jobs take so long to run that we
can't risk too many more failed experiments.
