The AIPS Manager FAQ has a sewction on just this problem. See http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/aips/aipsmgr/index.html It arises from the default X Windows in Linux using 16 bit TrueColor which is not enough for science so XAS does not support it. You can change to a 24 or 32 bit TrueColor or an 8 bit PseudoColor visual. Eric Greisen
