Gustaaf is away this week, and I wanted to push this forward. I have
re-written Gustaaf's original draft and have come up with the
announcement below, included as the first attachment. Please pass it on
to all computer professionals in your group(s).
As a second attachment, I have added my own zeroth order book selection.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Announcement
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a great demand by computer professionals for technical computer
books, but, unfortunately, they become obsolete very quickly. This
limits the use of putting them in a classical (paper) library. Many of
us have technical books on our shelves that are so obsolete that they
are just retained there for historical interest.
As a result of a proposal made by Ellen Bouton, we have let a contract
so that the NRAO can experiment with using an on-line virtual library.
The contract will run for one year initially, and is renewable if
appropriate.
Technically, the library is situated at a non-NRAO site. Books are
checked out for a time by you (an NRAO employee), and are then
browseable by you ONLY until the book is checked back in. Printing is
sensibly limited. Access to the books are limited to normal book
browsing. Small sections may be printed (as you might photocopy a real
book), but, if they detect you trying to browse a huge number of pages
quickly (as you would do if, for example, you were trying to print the
whole tome), this will not be permitted. Check-in policy is flexible,
but specified by the customer. The vendor supplies usage statistics,
so we can add further "copies" of a volume that is in high demand, and
drop those that are not referenced.
We propose using this virtual library to provide the books that you
would normally buy (or want to buy) for your shelves - but you should
still buy copies of books that you will want to refer to constantly.
Likewise, books that you would access on timescales of a year are also
inappropriate. For this use, we propose a policy that forces a check-in
of all books after 24 hours.
So, we need your help in deciding which books we want in this virtual
library. The present contract allows for a selection of a maximum of 60
books on computer subjects. Remember also that this selection will be
available to all employees, so some general titles are needed. Not all
books are available for the service. Nevertheless, there is an adequate
selection including many (all) of the O'Reilly, McGraw Hill, Que, etc.,
publications. The spreadsheet containing the complete list of available
titles is at: \\Eagle\CV-temp\library\TitleSelectcompsci_1.xls.
[The spreadsheet with printable PDF and PostScript files listing columns
2-5 are also in the \\halebopp\ghunt\library directory. For the
Windows-impaired (or Microsoftophobes?), the same three files are in the
~ghunt/library Unix directory at all four sites.]
Please e-mail your selections to Gustaaf van Moorsel <gvanmoor at nrao.edu>
and Gareth Hunt <ghunt at nrao.edu>. We will select the ~60 most popular
titles from your responses.
Gareth's first pass at a selection.
The available list is nowhere near exhaustive, and I found it weak in
Software Modeling, Active Directory, and Real-time issues such as
Threads, among others. Nevertheless, I have selected ~40 titles. Some
of these are of general interest, others reflect areas where I
personally need reference materials, and others are in topical areas. I
make no guarantee that the books are any good; I have selected them
merely on title. I have not had time to research book reviews. I hope
that you will be able to find time to do that in the areas that you are
interested in.
My initial selection from that list is below:
