I am using the 15OCT98 version of AIPS with RedHat Linux 5.2 on a PC. Linux, AIPS, and a small amount of data are all that are on one hard disk drive. I used AIPS extensively last year and everything was working great. When I fired up AIPS, it appeared to start up correctly with no obvious errors. Commands like 'MC','UC', or 'PRTHI' work fine, however when I use commands like 'TASK CCNTR' or 'INP JMFIT', I get an error:

AIPS1: ZDIR: COULD NOT TRANSLATE LOGICAL =
AIPS1: ZDIR: MYAIPS
AIPS1: ZTXMAT ERROR = 2

No tasks appear to be recognized.

The VERSION adverb is set to "MYAIPS" - presumably some logical
(environment variable) that was set last time you ran.  It is not now
set so it cannot find help files etc.  Enter

       VERSION = ' '

and things will be restored to functioning.

Verbs like GO, INPUTS, etc have inputs themselves.  VERSION allows you
to run an older or private version of a task.
