[daip] From Greenhill/trouble with XAS on LINUXPPC machine

hi Eric,

I have a problem with my recently upgraded SuSE LINUX for PPC (v7.1).
 
Version 6.4 worked well for aips.  TV displays worked.
After the upgrade TV's nolonger work.  Below is the error
message I receive
 
XAS: ***********************************
XAS: **  No TrueColor found
XAS: **  Resorting to PseudoColor
XAS: ***********************************
XAS: No pseudocolor visual - No suitable visual: No such file or directory
 
Perhaps you have an educated guess as to what is wrong.  I believe the
problem is only in the default setup for the display of this system.
I have found that remote display of aips TV windows on this system's screen
also do not work (same error).
 
The same is true for IDL remote display on this system's screen - the error
msg is different but the display is still aborted. 

I note couple more items: (1) the default color depth seems to be 15 bits.
I have tried 8 bits but then cannot make the display work.  (2) I am using
31DEC01.  Then I used LINUXv6.4, I ran 31DEC99.
