You neglected to say what kind of computer - but this message occurs
only with Solaris (usually anyway).  The default shared memory segment
maximum size is 1 Megabyte.  It needs to be 4 or more to support
modern TrueColor larger screens.  Add to /etc/system the lines

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=8388608

which should be more than enough.
