"configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
 cannot create executables."

Solaris system with Fortran licensed but C not licensed perhaps?  No,
because ZTRLOP compiled fine and PP.FOR (Fortran) got built nicely.

You need to try to cd to the SUL/LIBR/GNU area, and try

    ./configure

by hand.  The script uses a --quiet or something like that to suppress a
lot of the chatter.  This may still not reveal a whole heck of a lot, but
you may be able to override the compiler selection with 

    ./configure CC=/opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc

instead of gcc which it's probably trying to use.
