Hello friends,

I will try to be brief, but you may wish to get comfortable.

I originally installed AIPS version 15JUL95 under Linux
Slackware 3 running an old kernel - 1.3 maybe. I upgraded
to a version 2 kernel and everything worked fine.
This system worked well for years, until this spring when
I finally re-installed the operating system from scratch
and installed Redhat 6.0.

I have two disks, an ide for my OS, and a scsi for my data.
The installation of RedHat destroyed the partition table
on the scsi, where all my AIPS data was stored. Anyway,
under Redhat, my old version of AIPS (a Random Factory CDROM)
no longer loads - the installation program simply will not run.
I therefore am using another machine running 31DEC99 AIPS,
which mounts my old data disk.

Now then, I found a program on the net which recovered the
first partition on my scsi, but not the second. It is my
intention to try and recover all the AIPS data on the
first partition before trying to recover the second partition.

The trouble now is that 31DEC99 does not seem to be reading
my old AIPS data correctly. I have to set USERID=32000
to see any of the files, and the headers are not being read
correctly. An example of an AIPS session follows.

So, does anyone there have an idea about how to recover this
data? Thank you for whatever suggestions you can offer.

Cheers,

Michael Allen

A confused look appeared in Sindbad's eyes and al-Maheeni said to him,
"The roc had not previously flown with a man, and what did you do?
You left it at the first opportunity, drawn by the sparkle of diamonds.
The roc flies from an unknown world to an unknown world ...
be not content with anything for it is the wish of the Sublime."
