I found the problem. I had assumed that default REWEIGHT (=0) would
equalise the two data files. I realised just now that I have to input the
ratio of the gridding weights by hand - I had assumed that this is what
was happening in the default. 

I put in the correct REWEIGHT adverb and now things are fine.
