Calendar: AOC Conference Room 317

Description:
Presented by Phil Kronberg (LANL)

Complete radio imaging of a field of sky requires the collection of *all* Fourier components of the image -- i.e. |u,v|= (0,0) to (u_max, v_max). For wide fields of several degrees it can be challenging to produce a distortion-free field of optimum surface brightness sensitivity. This is especially important in low frequency radio astronomy. If structures on *all* angular scales are to be well reproduced, the combination of a single dish and an interferometer is generally needed. The largest structures often have low surface brightness, so ideally, a large single dish is needed.
In my talk, I describe how the DRAO synthesis telescope, a wide field interferometer of 1km effective aperture, has been combined with the 0.3km aperture Arecibo telescope to produce ultra-low surface brightness continuum images of the sky at 0.4 GHz. I describe some of the first results and discoveries.
