The 31DEC06 release has been available for the past two weeks as the
new development version of AIPS. The Linux binary installation is
based on the Intel load modules. Because of their general nature
(they work for all computers but with special optimization for Pentium
IVs) the load modules require more disk space (700 Mbytes). But they
run faster than those produced by the GNU compiler even on AMD
computers. The Mac binries areproduced by the IBM compiler and
outperform GNU binaries substantially.
To do a binary installation:
ftp ftp.aoc.nrao.edu
account: anonymous
password: your e-mail address
cd pub/software/aips/31DEC06
get install.pl
exit
Put the install.pl in your $AIPS_ROOT directory,
perl install.pl -n
where the -n tells it to use the binary (network) intallation method.
