[I thought this had made it through the news-to-mail gateway (from
alt.sci.astro.aips) but I don't see it in the archives. Sorry if this is
a duplicate... and note that there is a followup about 1.0.1...]

Version 1.0 of SLIME, an interactive model-fitting program for AIPS is
now available over the net. SLIME is the first AIPS task to make
direct, extensive use of the X Window System and is also the first
AIPS task to be written in a language other than FORTRAN. It should
run on most UNIX systems that support the X Window System, Motif and
the Display PostScript extension to X provided that you have the
15JAN96 version of AIPS (or a later version). It has been tested
on SPARC-based workstations running Solaris 2.3 or later and
ALPHA/AXP-based workstations running OSF1 T3.2.

This release is usable but lacks a number of desirable features which
will be added over the next six to nine months. It is being made
publicly available at this point in order to elicit feedback from
users which will be used to guide future developments.

See the web page http://info.aoc.nrao.edu/~cflatter/slime.html for
further details. If you do not have a web browser, download the
files slime.tar.gz and slime.ps.gz from /pub/cflatter on
ftp.aoc.nrao.edu using anonymous ftp. The PostScript file contains
installation instructions and a number of screen shots. Both files
have been compressed with the GNU gzip utility.
