Please make your plans to attend a meeting in the Washington area beginning Saturday morning, 28 January and ending in time to catch afternoon flights on Sunday, 29 January. Almost certainly, a flight into and out of Dulles will be most convenient. Chris, John and your project scientists will develop an agenda as soon as possible and advertise it. The nearest hotels are ~20 minutes away and once you are there -- you are there -- nothing much else. The Arlington area where NSF is located is about 40 minutes from the airport. The AUI location is around 50 minutes away (these are all non-rush hour estimates). UMD is about 50 minutes from Dulles. The AUI location is the most "downtown" of the above locations; it is near Dupont Circle. The NSF is right next to a major up-scale shopping mall with a good selection of eateries in the area. cheers, Lee On Wed, 4 Jan 2006, Chris Carilli wrote: > once we are in DC, no sense in hanging around Dulles. > I would vote for AUI or UMd. > cc > > > Al Wootten wrote: > >> Dear folks, >> >> At today's telecon, the ASAC decided to move its meeting from the >> previously planned 28/29 January in Los Angeles to 28/29 January in >> the vicinity of Washington, D. Adrian Russell and I would like to take the opportunity to thank Paul for his superb work in developing the plans for the NAASC and helping bring it into reality. Of course Paul was also pivotal in the genesis of the entire ALMA project as well - we all owe him a tremendous debt! We are currently going through an internal search for a full-time Head of the NAASC and expect to fill the post very soon. In the meantime, Adrian Russell will assume the role of acting Head of the NAASC. We are also delighted to announce that John Hibbard has assumed the role of Acting Head of the NA ALMA Regional Center, a subset of the NAASC with responsibilities for the core ALMA Operations functions in North America. Initially covering the most interesting spectral wavelength ranges from 3 to 0.3 mm, ALMA will be a revolutionary telescope providing astronomy with the first detailed view of the dark and youngest objects of the Universe. The scientific preparations for ALMA are being extremely active since the birth of the project. The various science committees, groups of astronomers working for ALMA, and regional communities interested in the project meet regularly to exchange ideas about the scientific capabilities and first observations to be carried out with the interferometer. A first world-wide conference on "Science with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array" took place in Washington, D.C. (USA), on 6-8 October 1999. The conference to be held in Madrid (Spain), on 13-16 November 2006, will be the second world-wide meeting on "Science with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array". This international ALMA conference is envisioned as a way for the astronomers interested on ALMA, not necessarily radioastronomers, to exchange views, to plan preparatory observations in view of the scientific exploitation of the interferometer, and to obtain the information needed to orient their scientific work to the best possible use of ALMA. The conference will cover a wide range of topics, which will indeed include the main scientific drivers of ALMA: the formation and evolution of galaxies, the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, and the processes of star and planet formation.
