Mark, and all,
Yes, your arguments that area of optimisation of sidelobes beeing
TWICE the entire primary beam are correct at least for the expanded sources
occuping the whole primary beam.
Therefore looking at the two type of side lobes optimization at my last
memo, the people will prefer probably the second type optimization
inside of the whole primary beam. As I wrote to you the area of
optimization at the second type bigger than TWICE the entire primary
beam.
The reason that I included the optimization of the nearest side lobes is
in the existing opinion that the gausian distribution at the UV plane can
be the goal of the array design.
I'd like to say a couple of words about gaussian distribution at the UV
plane as a critireon for the design of an array configuration, the
compact configuration in particular.
I think the Gaussian distribution itself can not be a goal but the
intermidiate criterion which can give good some (but not all) actual
parameters of the array: shape of the beam, sidelobes..., .
The Gaussian distribution at the UV plane should give small side lobes
but only the nearest ones. The far sidelobes can be big even with the
Gaussian distribution at the UV plane.
