wouldn't we want instead:

FI = 1 / max(abs(Residual) / Reference on ON-SOURCE pixels)

???  in other words, what is the most unbelievable pixel in the
on-source reconstructed image?

or, if the statistics of the (abs(Residual) / Reference on ON-SOURCE pixels)
values are approximately gaussian, then the variance might be more
appropriate.  it's just not clear to me that they will be gaussian.
