Hi difx-users,

Some of the recipients of this list may be interested in the position
described below, or may know others who are; apologies in advance to people
who receive this through multiple channels. For more information, please
contact Torben Schüler (details at the end of the summary), who can also
provide the official advertisement (in German; I've left it off this email
because it would blow the attachment size limit).

Cheers,
Adam

The German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) is seeking a
Senior Researcher for the newly-established VLBI correlation facility at
the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell in Germany to lead its further
development and operations. This is a permanent, full-time position
remunerated according to the German Federal Salary Grade 13 or 14 —
depending on the candidate’s qualifications and professional experience.

The Wettzell VLBI correlator is foreseen to carry out critical and near
real-time correlation work to provide Earth orientation information taking
the needs of satellite navigation into consideration. These activities will
be embedded into the workings of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy
and Astrometry (IVS). It is our aim to support this service once all
processes are well-established, tested and quality-controlled. The
successful candidate is expected to instruct the engineering staff in
routine correlation tasks and to organize all high-level facets necessary
to run the correlation facility.

We provide a stimulating environment with opportunities for
self-responsible scientific and technical work. This may include, for
instance, correlation-related endeavors to improve the DiFX software
correlator within the existing international community, but also work in
neighboring fields such as VLBI scheduling, source structure analysis, and
data quality control to improve geodetic VLBI.

The ideal candidate has an education and professional experience related to
Very Long Baseline Interferometry and/or radio astronomy. A Ph.D. is an
advantage, but it is not a prerequisite. Programming skills, preferably in
C/C++ and Python, are necessary. You will be working in a Linux
environment. You must be able and willing to instruct and lead staff
members. BKG does offer corresponding training opportunities, but
experience in this field is of advantage. The ability to work
independently, but also to take direction, is a must. Note that good German
language skills are expected; international candidates need to be able to
prove their willingness to meet this requirement.

BKG conjointly runs the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell, a fundamental
station of Geodesy, with the Technical University of Munich since 1972.
Wettzell is currently operating three geodetic VLBI antennas, two of them
featuring VGOS receiving systems. Two smaller antennas for space weather
and GNSS signal monitoring are under construction. Do not hesitate to
contact me in case of any questions. Your application must reach us no
later than May
31.
