However, this assumes that the Tsys and gain values for Y27 are properly loaded. I would recommend doing “manual instrumental delay” calibration rather than using the pulse-cal tones, though. (If you are following the AIPS VLBA recipe in Appendix C of the AIPS Cookbook, use VLBAMPCL instead of VLBAPCOR.)</div><div>Unfortunately, almost every VLBI data set has its own peculiarities (which is one of the reasons why it is so hard to design an calibration pipeline for VLBI data), and Y27 can add to that. Many times, you just have to run through the calibration process two or three time, making slightly different choices each time, until things look good.</div><div>It looks like your observation was done at X-band. That means it may be possible to use Y27 as your reference antenna throughout the calibration. Having a reference antenna with high sensitivity in the middle of the array can be very beneficial. However, the fact that you have to do phase-up scans for Y27 may lead to some issues. If your observation was at Ku-band or higher, I would recommend not using Y27 as the reference antenna because VLA single-station blind pointing is not as good as VLBA blind pointing. And at L-band the RFI is likely to be much worse on the VLA antennas than on the VLBA antennas (especially in the more compact configurations).</div><div>Here is a possible approach you could take:</div><div>Trial 1: Calibrate the data following the AIPS Cookbook VLBA procedure and use Y27 as the reference antenna. Be sure to inspect the calibration tables along the way to watch for problems.</div><div>Trial 2: Calibrate the data following the AIPS Cookbook, but use one of the VLBA stations as the reference antenna (usually LA, PT, FD, or KP are good options). See if things look better or worse than Trial 1.</div><div>Trial 3: (If 1 or 2 just don’t seem to work) Calibrate just the VLBA stations without Y27, then add in Y27 and refine the calibration.</div><div>Try not to get frustrated if you find that you need to restart the calibration multiple times. Most people have to go through several calibration runs on their first VLBI data set. I think I had to go through the calibration 4 or 5 times on my first VLBA data set because I just made small mistakes each time.</div><div>Good luck!</div><div>Justin</div></div><!-- DP_MESSAGE_END -->
