<div>Hello,</div><div><br></div><div>I have a question regarding the behavior of CLCAL in AIPS, specifically how it applies solutions obtained from FRING. I’m working with a VLBA dataset and focusing on a single source that was observed in two 6 minute scans separated by ~5 hours.</div><div><br></div><div>I reach the step of the global fringe fit without any problem, and then I run FRING with:</div><div><br></div><div>calsour '2225+247'</div><div>refant 11</div><div>docalib 1</div><div>gainuse 8</div><div>doband 1</div><div>solint 6 # The scan length </div><div>aparm(1) 2</div><div>aparm(5) 0</div><div>aparm(6) 2</div><div>aparm(7) 5</div><div>aparm(9) 1</div><div>dparm(1) 1</div><div>dparm(2) 1000</div><div>dparm(3) 200</div><div><br></div><div>It reports 8 out of 80 failed solutions which correspond, based on the SN table, to antennas FD and HN during the first scan. This makes sense, as those data looked like incoherent noise from the start. In the second scan all antennas show good solutions.</div><div>However, after applying the SN table with CLCAL using:</div><div><br></div><div>opcode 'CALI'</div><div>interpol 'SELF'</div><div>gainver 8</div><div><br></div><div>I notice that, although FD and HN have weights of [0, 0, 0, 0] in the first scan of the SN table (i.e., they are flagged), the resulting CL table still shows solutions for these antennas in the first scan. Upon inspection, it seems that CLCAL has copied delay and rate solutions from the second scan into the first.</div><div><br></div><div>When I limit the interpolation range using the CUTOFF adverb, this behavior disappears and FD and HN also remain flagged in the first scan in the CL table. This makes me think that, by default, CLCAL extrapolates failed FRING solutions with solutions from other scans and, if no nearby scans are found, then it just copies solutions from the nearest one.</div><div><br></div><div>Am I interpreting this correctly? Is this the expected default behavior of CLCAL or am I doing anything wrong? In this case, the “extrapolated” solutions are clearly incorrect due to the large time gap, and I would prefer that they remain flagged instead.</div><div><br></div><div>Thank you for your time.</div><div>Diego</div>
