I am tying do RM synthesis with VLBA data. As a start, to do this I created I, Q, and U images at each of 8 IFs across part of C band. Then using MCUBE I created Q and U cubes and used DOFARS to run FARS.

1. None of the results make any sense to me because when I try to view them with PLCUB it fails when run on the FARSam output. When run on the TRANSam output it produces what look like Faraday spectra (hard to be sure), but not in the expected array of plots across the sky.

I have attached a number of files to illustrate my procedures. I'd appreciate guidance as to where I'm going wrong.

This is a phase referenced experiment so that I can correct for the core shifts in the source (3C273). I can try to do this in the visibility plane or in the image plane, depending on what the AIPS software can handle:

2. Eventually I'd like to perform the RM synthesis on a combination of data in five different bands, two in C, S, and two in L. Can you tell me how I go about combining all the calibrated (and phase shifted) visibility data into a single u-v file (if that is possible!)? Is it a simple matter of using DBCON repeatedly?

3. Can I make and U cubes using my five frequency bands together? All of the images are made on the same spatial grid. I can imagine how to do it, but will MCUBE be able to handle it?

As you can see, I am feeling my way along with this difficult experiment. All the help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave
