seek money to<BR>try new approaches to improve student achievement or to<BR>initiate a proven program that has already been successful<BR>with similar populations.  </P><P>In order to qualify for a lot of this money, you must prove <BR>you have a population, or sub-population, that is not <BR>performing up to standard.  You will also show, on<BR>paper at least, how your newly-funded program or process<BR>will help those students close the gap, or even meet or <BR>exceed the published standards.</P><P>What types of student information might you need to <BR>include in order to prove you need grant money to <BR>achieve your goals?  Here is a list you might <BR>consider as you begin your needs assessment:</P><P>Student demographics (gender, race, age, economic status,<BR>grade, etc.)</P><P>Number and percentages of students in special programs<BR>such as special education, ESL, GT, etc.</P><P>Disaggregated results of standardized testing</P><P>Attendance 

ratesDisciplinary figuresPassing rates on state testing by grade, subject and  subgroupGraduation and dropout ratesSAT/ACT participation and resultsThese types of statistics should paint a good picture  of your population and the problem areas you're trying  to remedy.You won't use all of the above information on every grant application.  You could even hurt your application by putting in irrelevant statistical information.  But  don't leave out anything that will strengthen your appeal  for grant money to help improve student achievement in any  area.You may be able to write in flowery language and be a  tremendous persuader, but nothing will get you a grant faster than truly understanding your needs and using statistical information to back up your claims.The first step in the change process is to understand the  problem.  When grant readers see you clearly understand!
